There are several routes leading from Fjellbu to Skulstadhornet, along the long ridge that is Skulstadhornet's south ridge. This route description assumes one is following the top of the ridge from the end of the road going up to Fjellbu.

If arriving Brattvåg from south on road 659 continue for 2.5 km after having entered the 50km/h zone. Here one will pass the Coop and the "Ingebrikt Davik-huset" (on one's right hand side). Turn left, continuing on the Storgata road for another 250 metres. Just before a small bridge, after having passed the Brattvåg primary school, turn left. Continue upwards for 1.4 km. Here you will find Brattvåg kindergarten on your left. Park here. The first 450 metres continue south on the road you are parked next to ("Fjellbu"). Follow this road uphill until it makes a 90° right turn. Here, turning left will take you to a small turnaround place. To the left (east) of the southern most house surrounding this turnaround place there is a garage. Walk past it on the left (east) side, and you will find the path. Follow this path in a southern direction. Wherever the path forks try to stay on the branch that seems to lead you to the top of the ridge. Here the terrain is more dry than the wetter areas off the centre of the ridge.

Continue upwards through the forest. As you get above the forest you will see Håvikhornet ahead of you; Skulstadhornet is hidden behind. Continuing along the ridge will take you to the a registration point for Brattvåg IL mountain hiking competition ("Tannlegepostkassa", where a registration is worth 3 points). There is a power cable crossing above you at this point. From here follow the path upwards (south). The first small peak you get to is without any name. The next peak is Håvikhornet (it has a trigonometric point). Here is another registration point for Brattvåg IL (worth 4 points). 250 metres further south lies Skulstadhornet. This is a registration point for Norborg IL mountain hiking competition (the registration book can be found inside a small glass located under one of the stones).

The descent goes back down to the power line ("Tannlegepostkassa"). At this point turn right (east) and follow the path downwards in a northern direction. Where the downhill terrain is getting steeper you can see a small plain (a small lake in times of heavy rain) to the north. This is your next point to aim for. The path will bring you down to the south end of this plain; Håvikdemma. There is yet another Brattvåg IL registration point here (worth 2 points). From here walk around the plain on the east side to get to the north end of the plain. If you follow the path around the plain make sure you fork to the left towards the north end of the plain, just before the path is starting to climb.

The path from the north end of Håvikdemma is at places very wet. It follows the bottom of the Høgenakken hillside in a northern direction, before it climbs back up to Fjellbu.

10. March 2008

What a wonderful afternoon hike! The first hike this year done after work without head lamp.

I set off from home at 16:30, skipping dinner (and any other type of food, which I realised after 30 minutes walking/running) and instead enjoying time outdoor under a clear sky, with the sun still well above the mountains, and zero wind.

Unfortunately I didn't bring my camera; the view from Skulstadhornet summit to the all-white Sunnmøre alps was amazing. I was actually considering bringing the camera, but was thinking something like "there will be other fine days; I'll bring it then". Mistake, again.

On my way back down from Skulstadhornet I met Espen, who had also realised that this afternoon was not meant for sitting inside watching television.
