From Ålesund drive road E39 towards Åndalsnes. Turn left onto road 661 towards Tennfjord/Vatne/Brattvåg at Digerneset and continue 8.7 km until you get to the intersection of roads 661 and 659 at Eidet (by Tennfjord). There is a toll booth 1.6km after leaving road E39 (NOK 30, August 2008). At the Eidet intersection turn left, and continue on road 659 towards Brattvåg for 7.2 km. After the second of the two tunnels continue another 300 metres, and turn right on the first exit. 80 metres later turn right again, and find parking close to the sign directing you towards "Remefjellet", next to an old barn.
Start walking in the direction of the sign and follow this gravel road for approximately 200 metres and turn right onto a grassy forest road. Follow this road uphill for 1.5 km, until you see a standing stone marked by a red "F" where a path forks off to the left (north). Follow this path north to 550 metres, and then turn right (east) towards the small plateau called Remeheia. Continue on this path towards the east ridge of Urfjellet, and then follow the path to the summit.
From the summit of Urfjellet head back along the east ridge and turn left at around 800 metres. Find your best route north-east towards the highest point on the saddle between Urfjellet and Storfjellet. From here gradually turn north, and then up the boulder slopes of Storfjellet. Storfjellet's summit is marked by a proper cairn.
Descend by reversing your ascent route, including Urfjellet if you didn't include it during your ascent.
I had been working in the garden all day this Sunday, completing my many-years project of building various stone walls. Being very happy, and quite exhausted, having finished the work, I was on my way for the n-hundredth hike to Heimste Synnalandsheia when I suddenly got the idea to hike Storfjellet. Since I hadn't been to this highest mountain visible from my living room for eleven years I couldn't quite recall how far it was from Urfjellet to Storfjellet, but as usual I made the mistake of thinking something like "it can't be that far". So a quick change into hiking gear, and off I went.
The route from Reme to Urfjellet is something I'm quite familiar with, and I knew it's a steep climb, but nothing that's going to kill you if have some reserves left after the run along the forest road up from Reme. But I had totally mis-calculated (actually no calculations; just poor memory from my hike eleven years ago), and I did not remember the hike from Urfjellet's east ridge to Storfjellet being that long. This part of the hike took med 50 minutes, including pushing hard up the steep slopes to Storfjellet. But the reward was fantastic; both the joy of being here and the fine views in all directions.
After taking photos and signing the summit registration book I headed back
towards Urfjellet, including the summit, and then back down to Reme for the
drive home.
